Growing up, several of my classmates told me they thought I was smart. Since I wanted to belong, I tended to lap that up. At some point in high school, I credit it to my Psych\/Soc class, I redefined my notion of smart. I decided that being able to remember random facts and information for tests didn’t qualify. At this point in my life, I just try to avoid the discussion.<\/p>\n
Why did the other kids think I was smart? Simply because I could remember what I heard long enough to repeat it back for the tests. If you were to give me a complex mathematical equation to solve or ask me to find all the metaphors and subtle meanings in a great work of literature, I might stumble my way through it. Now, I would just tell you that there was no sense in wasting our time waiting for me to come up with an answer.<\/p>\n
Sometimes, I look back at those school comments and think how much I fooled those people. Especially if you use the definition that says intelligence is the ability to quickly and easily adapt to change. I don’t like it if I had planned to have something for breakfast only to realize that we are out of it. I will tolerate change, but I would prefer it if I wasn’t in the same room with change.<\/p>\n
Of course, I’m not without good qualities. I do remember random facts and I’m told I am decent at graphic design.<\/p>\n

There are times that we put too much emphasis on what others think of us. I shouldn’t have spent time trying to live up to the smart label. On the other hand, I shouldn’t brush of sincere complements like they’re something caustic. If you think that you have nothing to offer, you’re wrong. It may just be you haven’t found the place that needs what you have to give.<\/p>\n
If you were to drop me in Silicon Valley, I’d probably be doing menial tasks. I don’t have much to offer them. Where I’m at, there are things that I can do that others can’t or don’t have time to. We all have been created for a purpose. Quit looking at what you can’t do and do what you can.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
