A penny for your thoughts. Your two cents. How did words get so undervalued? I guess I could be crusty and blame pictures, since one of them is worth a 1,000 words. But pictures are inanimate, they didn’t decide the rate of exchange. So what happened?

I doubt that the exact course could ever be found by any of us, but that rarely stops me from pondering. My guess is that we are all to blame. How much value do you place on words? Do you choose them carefully, as you would a gift? I tend not to. Even more than that, I often don’t use them when I should.

It is so much easier to say I can’t find the words, or that I’m afraid to use the wrong ones/tone, than to put effort into actually seeking the right words. As always, looking at Jesus gives us a clear, perfect model. Did He go around spouting off nonsense? No, He was careful in His words. You never read of Him apologizing for using the wrong phrase; He said what He meant and meant what He said.

Now, I know that we are fully capable of trying to say it right, but slipping on a word, or stammering. I do that a lot, but my point is that we have devalued words, written and spoken. I’m all for pictures, and even electronics. But, when it comes right down to it, there is no replacing words for me. I need to see pictures of some things, like floor plans, but for me to understand a scenic view, it is much easier, or at least more fun, to build it in my mind from words that I read.

When it comes right down to it, I want to use words more. Not necessarily more words, but I want listeners and readers to get the full value. Whether I’m writing a random thought I had, or explaining a Bible passage.

Talk is cheap. A penny for your thoughts. Your two cents.
