I don’t know how many people have heard this term, I don’t know where I got it from, but I’ll use it anyway. Book smart but street dumb. The way it was explained to me, you know facts, but cannot relate to reality. You can rattle off the stats of any given sports team, but don’t understand why people are always looking around for someone else to talk to when you speak. You can relate quantum theory, but can’t see the pain in someone’s eyes. You can quote untold numbers of Bible verses, but won’t step forward to share someone else’s burdens.<\/p>\n
I’ve been thinking over the past couple of weeks on how much I “study” the Bible. There are 4-5 times a week that I have an organized group study, and several times of personal study each week. What am I getting from it all? Am I getting any more street smarts? There are times that I can recall a verse that might<\/strong><\/em> help somebody, or that could<\/strong><\/em> make a point. But am I actually applying what I read? Do I do everything as I were doing it for God? Do I speak in love? Do I seek His kingdom first? Or do I just carry a deck of God cards around for the studies?<\/p>\n I know studying the Bible is important; you cannot live what you don’t know. But can you reach a time that you study so much you don’t have the time or energy to do anything else? If you can be too busy doing church work, can you also get too busy reading the Bible, and not living it?<\/p>\n Going even deeper, can you know the Bible so well that you cannot relate to someone else? Let me explain that a little. When I was in school, there was a teacher that was very smart. However, students could not understand what he taught.
