Those who hang around me for a while either start looking for ways to escape, or wonder about me. Usually because I have said some piece of trivia that is totally off the wall. Many times, I will hear something that reminds me of something I read, sometimes years, before. More often than not, the fact has nothing to do with what is being discussed, except for maybe a word or two in common.<\/p>\n
Much of this comes from my free time. In college, I found a website that had bits of trivia, and over the years, I have collected books on trivia. Other than guessing the answer on game shows a few times a month, this information generally serves no purpose, except to confuse people when I bring it up at random times. However, it does sometimes fit into a devotional idea, which you are about to be subjected to. If you plan to turn back, now is the time. You have been warned.<\/p>\n
Random knowledge does not serve much purpose. There are times when it can be handy, but they can be few and far between. It is better to stick with the more useful knowledge. Too often, at least on my part, we treat the Bible as a trivia dispenser, reading bits and pieces of it so that we can answer questions that might come up. This is a good start, but we really need to go deeper.<\/p>\n
In 1 Peter 3:15, we can find a very good reason to actually study God’s word. You can click the link to read it, because I’m going to paraphrase it. Peter tells us that we need to be ready to explain why we have hope whenever someone asks. Somebody is going to ask, and it won’t be something random like, “What is the first line of Psalm 23?” (Did you peek?) They are going to want to know why in the world you think and act differently. What will you tell them? I don’t think they’re going to be satisfied with knowing James and John were called called “Sons of Thunder,” or that the names of Pharoah’s magicians were Jannes and Jambres… Oh, I just gave away one one of my favorite stumpers. Anyway, they are going to want a real answer, one that they can understand. Memorizing verses that mean something to you is something you should do. But you need to go further, be able to tell people what you believe and why. It doesn’t have to be fancy, and don’t compare the way it sounds to other people.
