Anyone involved in a ministry position, or one that involves dealing directly with people, knows that things don’t work according to plan. Many can shrug off these issues, but there are just as many who cannot. Problems lead to nervousness, then to anxiety, and even being depressed. The Black Dog<\/em> describes how one man faced this, and what he has found out.<\/p>\n

I was intent on reading The Black Dog<\/em> as soon as I saw it available. I had read the summary of it, and I wanted to know more. I have experienced “low” times because of my responsibilities in church. Though I cannot fully relate to the level that others with clinical anxiety and depression can sink to, I understand what facing that can lead to.<\/p>\n

John Dolan takes the reader through his life, starting in childhood, and going to present time, showing how depression and anxiety kept him from fully participating in life. He does not sugarcoat what happened, but tells it as it actually happened, including how it felt and appeared to him. Through out the book, he describes it as being a vicious black dog that attacks him. He tells it in a way that makes it easy for even those who can’t totally relate to understand.<\/p>\n

Dolan does not stop at describing the problem, but goes on to detail the treatments he went through, and continues to go through. He does this to help anyone else who may be experiencing the same problem.<\/p>\n

Though he does mention his trusting God for help, and that God has helped him, I do wish he would have gone into more detail about this. I know that each person will have to “meet” God in a different way, but I would have liked to have seen encouragement to go to a church and the Bible, He mentions both, but I just would have liked to have seen it talked about in greater detail.<\/p>\n

Overall, I think this is a great book to read. Even if you aren’t directly affected by a black dog, you will probably meet someone who is. Understanding what they face can be a great help to them.<\/p>\n
