I was in 3rd grade, and part of the school year involved lessons on outer space. That was my first in-depth look at science, and I was hooked. Since then, I have had a place in my head for science, always wanting to learn what I could. As such, I have quite a bit of trivia filed away that comes out when something reminds me of it. In addition to that, I still hold an inexplicable wonder of how things can be made from raw materials. I was looking at a book recently, getting ready to pick it up so I could read it. I remembered years ago, I sent away for information on how to make paper at home.

In my childhood mind, I expected a box of chemicals that I would use to make my very own paper from scraps. What I got was a brochure that described the soaking, blending and forming of the paper. Since then, I have experimented with that several times, but it never lived up to the expectations I had at first. Still, looking at something simple like paper, and knowing that it came from wood (usually) is somewhat amazing to me. Paper is soft and tears easily. Try tearing a tree in half if you have an afternoon to waste.

Paper isn’t the only thing like that. Look at something like a car, and how many different materials are used to build one. If you were to break them down to a raw form, you have powders, liquids and various other substances. They would look nothing like a finished car.

Do you remember what I started out with? You can look at it again if you need to, I don’t mind. The thing is, most of what we have took many parts, or many people to get to their finished state and location. Paper has more than wood in in, and it took a lot of people to get the paper into the book I was looking at, and more to get the book ready. We’ve already touched on the car.

What is the point of all this? Just that the Church is similar. It is made up of many people, but they work as one (at least they are supposed to. If not, there are other issues that need to be addressed). First Corinthians 12 talks about this. There are many members, but one body. Just like the products mentioned above, it will take all of us to make it work. However, since we tend to be stubborn, it will also take Jesus, as Head of the body, to get us to work together.

Are we just the pluribus, or have we begun to work on being the unum?

Whether you can quote the meaning of that phrase or not, you have probably seen or heard it.
