Now, with the disclaimer out of the way, on to the post.

I didn’t know quite what the book was going to be about. I had skimmed the summary, but nothing stood out. I had read another of Andy Stanley’s books, and I wanted to read this one, too. When I started the first chapter, I knew that my toes were going to end up being sore.

He explains about four feelings that get in the way of our relationships, both with others and with God (you might even want to throw ourselves in there). Guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy; all four of which I have become acquainted with in my lifetime.

Andy Stanley does a good job of relating them using examples from his life, and words that are easy to understand. I like big words as much as the next geek, but I have to know the easy ones first before I can learn the big ones. He went deep below the surface of these feelings, but never lost me. His use of verses made it clear that he wasn’t just pulling things out of thin air, but was using Biblical standards.

He did a good job of identifying the problem, then giving ways to combat it. He spoke on my level, not like he was talking down to the reader, but like he was sitting next to him on a park bench.

I’m not going to tell you what all he said because that would spoil things for you. I recommend this book if you find yourself struggling with any of the four feelings listed above, or even if you don’t. You might be surprised that what you thought you had avoided has just been disguised.

A word of warning, though these are my thoughts, they are a review of the book “Enemies of the Heart” which I received for free from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for this review.
