Are we teaching kids (and adults) the proper attributes of God? Williamson addresses how moralism is displacing grace in Is Sunday School Destroying Our Kids?<\/em><\/p>\n

I wanted to read this book because I have been involved in Sunday School for a long time, as both director and teacher. Anytime I can find out more about how to improve Sunday School, I want to learn from it. This book is not directly about Sunday School, but about teaching kids in general. In an effort to make God understandable, lessons can tend to push being moral and good. While that should be a goal, God’s grace is easily left out as kids are told that they need to be good (which translates to being good is self-accomplished) .<\/p>\n

Williamson gives examples of how lessons can tell how the good parts of the Bible heroes without telling about their problems. Grace is not grace if you deserve it. They were “heroes” because they acknowledge their inability to save themselves. They trusted in God. There must be a balance between teaching morality and grace. We will make a mess of things, but God still loves us.<\/p>\n

One point that stood out to me is that when we face temptation, we should not stop at resisting it, but should ask God why it is tempting us? What are we really after in wanting to commit this sin? We must continually seek God, not ourselves.<\/p>\n

Though it is a short book, there is a lot of helpful thoughts in it. Williamson presents everything in a clear way that doesn’t use a bunch of big words. He uses humor and Bible verses to illustrate his points.<\/p>\n

I feel that this would be a good book for parents and teachers, and can be applied to all ages.<\/p>\n
