We like to compare ourselves to others. We see the singers, artists, speakers, and think that we have no creativity, or not enough since we can’t match their work. But maybe we have an incomplete view of creativity. Perhaps it goes beyond art and applies to everyday life. Ken Wytsma looks at this idea in Create vs Copy.

Wytsma’s main point is that creativity is not limited to artists. We all have creativity because we are made in God’s image and He is the Creator. We should look at how we can be creative where we are, like finding a new way to do a common task. He says that we can create, or just copy and maintain the status quo.

I’m a graphic designer, so I am always looking at what others design, and I’m constantly wondering how I compare. That can quickly lead to feeling inadequate. I, and all of us, need to remember that we are called to do different things, not mimic what others do. However, we don’t need to rest on our past accomplishments, either. We should continue learning and growing, both as Christians and in whatever vocation we have.

Create vs Copy is easy to understand and applicable. It won’t solve all your problems, nor is it intended to. It will help to give you a start in the right direction.
