Tell Me a Story

When people ask about you, they tend to prefer more than just a list of facts. They are wanting a way to relate to you. This same thing is true when we want to know about God, and when we share what He has done for us with others. Scott McClellan writes how narratives help with both in Tell Me a Story.

McClellan shares how stories have a greater impact than bulleted lists. When we look at our lives this way, we can better understand how God is working in our lives. It makes more sense when we realize that we aren’t going through time in some random fashion, but as part of a plan, as a part of God’s story.

God is the author and narrator of the story that we are all in. This also gives us a different understanding of the Bible. The “drier” parts, like genealogies show more “characters” in the story. The Bible, though true, is not a just collection of facts.

I gained a different outlook on sharing my faith through McClellan’s book. I tend to be straight-froward and not elaborate unless asked. This isn’t what people are looking for when they ask about the hope that Christians have. They are looking for something they can grasp.

I did have some trouble staying focused on reading this book. I am not sure why, but I would say it has to do with me trying to over-analyze it. I do like what the book says.

I received a free copy of Tell Me a Story from Moody Publishers in exchange for this review.
