Humility seems like such a simple idea, but I have struggled with it for as long as I can remember. God wants us to be humble, toward Him and others, but how do we do that? The late Jerry Bridges goes through the Beatitudes and explains how they show humility, and what we get from being humble in The Blessing of Humility.
Society often equates being humble with being weak, but that is far from the truth. Humility is acknowledging that you are not better than others, and then acting in accordance with that knowledge. It is ineffective unless it becomes part of how we live and treat other people.
If we take an honest look at ourselves, we will realize how hard true humility is. So how do we pursue it? The gospel. Many Christians think that you only need the gospel that one time when you accept Jesus. As Jerry Bridges wrote, “The reality, though, is that the gospel is more like a path that you walk along for the rest of your life until you go to be with the Lord.”
This is the first book by Jerry Bridges I’ve read. I wasn’t familiar with him before, and I wanted to read this book because of the topic and the little bit of research I had done on the author. I don’t know how many times I have heard or read the Beatitudes, but I never connected them with humility. Jerry Bridges’ The Blessing of Humility explained humility in a way that I can easily understand and, hopefully, put into practice.
I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for this review, but that in no affected my opinion.
