Teenagers face many struggles as they grow up, and one of the biggest is the fact that people have low expectations for them. Teens aren’t expected to do much more than goof off. It is common for people, both teens and adults, to say that teens are just wanting to slide by and have fun. Though it has been several years since I have been a teenager, I do remember this idea floating around. Teenagers often appear to do the bare minimum, or less. What makes it worse is that we adults give up and quit encouraging them to do better,

The Harris twins look at the problem of low expectations, including how kids were expected to contribute to the family and society as recently as 200 years ago. Citing both historical and contemporary examples, they show how normal teens have made decisions to do hard things and make a difference. It can be done locally or worldwide, large or small scale. They also tell how today’s teens can step up and do more. Teens who have joined what has been dubbed the Rebelution are stepping up to help people and serve God.

Though my teen years behind me, Do Hard Things reminded me of how I could have done better, but also how I still can do better. Despite being aimed at teens, adults can learn from it, too. Whether it is taking the time to encourage a teen, or maybe even stepping up and doing something hard ourselves.
