Strange Glory

Strange Glory book coverDietrich Bonhoeffer is a pretty well know name, but what his life was like is not so well known. Charles Marsh shares Bonhoeffer’s childhood and growth that lead to him being an outspoken theologian in Strange Glory.

Beginning with his family life as a child, and continuing on through college and adult life, the events that molded his outlook and beliefs are shown. How he tried to get more out of life and not be afraid of being different or speaking out.

Marsh did an excellent job of gathering background and biographical information. The book is very thorough and detailed. You can see what Bonhoeffer’s family, childhood, adulthood, and experiences were like.

I liked being able to find out more about the man that I had heard quoted so many times before. It is one thing to just see a quote. Having background on the person who said it can help you understand why that quote means so much.

I did have trouble staying interested in reading it. It wasn’t really what I expected, and that kept me from staying with it. This is nothing against the book. I liked it for what it was, I just thought it would be a little faster paced. That is hard to do without skimping on details, though.

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.
