Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions

Though I do not have kids of my own, I interact with them at my church, and they need to know answers to tough questions. Explaining sin, death, disasters, and other theologically deep concepts can be hard, especially if you aren’t sure what words to use. Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson hope to help with that in Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions.

Each chapter covers a particular topic that a child might ask about, and does a simple, but thorough job of explaining it. Background information is given, along with scripture references, so that the adult knows about the concept well enough to discuss it with the child. After that, a section covers ways to talk to children in 3 different age ranges. This helps break the information down further to make it easier to talk with a certain age child.

One of the points that stuck with me, and is one that is easy to ignore for adults, is that we don’t have to know it all. It is alright to not be able to answer your child’s question immediately. We all have a lot to learn, so we shouldn’t pretend to be a spiritual know-it-all.

Though it is aimed at parents, anyone who is around kids will face them asking hard questions about what is happening in the world. Fitzpatrick and Thompson have written a book that will help tremendously with answering those questions.

I received a free copy of Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.
