Tokens of Promise

Rescued from an abusive husband, Tamar must now fight her feelings for her rescuer, especially since he does not want to break his vow of having only one wife.

Tokens of Promise takes place in the time of ancient Israel, and involves Judah, the son of Jacob. It tells how Judah rescue Tamar from an abusive man, and that he decides to give her to his son as a wife. She, however, falls in love with him, and must deal with what she wants compared to what is going to happen.

We follow Tamar and Judah, and the relationships along the way, and see the mistakes that are made by the people. It does a good job of staying on track and being easy to understand.

The book creates a bit of back-story, even if it is fictional, for the family of Judah. It does not change any facts found in the Bible, just builds a story around them. It can help to better understand the story of Judah and his family, and how they related to one another.

I do have an issue with the vivid imagery used in the book. The descriptions of the relationships between men and women were more graphic than I expected and wanted to see. I know Teresa Pollard did that on purpose, and I understand her reasons, but that is something that I, personally, must be careful with and watch myself on. My imagination can run wild too easily to read things like that without being careful.

I received this book from BookCrash.com in exchange for reading it and giving an honest review.

  1. Philip,
Thank you so much for the review! I really appreciate that you want to guard your eyes! It was my one concern in writing this story. I even asked my publisher, if she could find any way, to edit out any of those scenes without losing the truth of Er’s evil nature or why He might have killed Onan, or what happened between Tamar and Judah. She didn’t cut a word of any of those parts! I do feel that we, as Christians, have kept silent on the issue of sexuality for so long that we have given over the entire realm to Satan, and that’s why the world is in the sad shape it’s in. People need to know there are consequences to their actions, and God will not restrain them forever! Stand true to your beliefs and stay strong! God bless. Teresa
