Spark

Sometimes you have to take risks to fully live life. That may bring to mind riding all those crazy rides at amusement parks, or taking a trip up a mountain, but there are other risks that don’t look so big. That is the point behind Spark by Jason Jaggard. A small step can lead to big results.

I am not a risk taker, so seeing that word made me wary about what I would find in the rest of the book. I didn’t find anything about having to climb a mountain, or ride the fastest roller coaster you could find. Instead, taking a risk could be as simple as volunteering at a mission.

Jason Jaggard explains how we can become complacent, and so afraid of making a mistake that we become stationary. Using stories about people he has met and worked with, he shows how small steps can lead to big results. He also relates passages from the Bible, albeit in a modern conversational style, to illustrate that God wants us to step up, too.

The main point he makes is to take one small risk that will help make yourself or the world better. Even if you mess up, do something. I am not opposed to action like this, but the way he talked about thinking too much, it seemed like he advocated spontaneity over planning, at least at times. I may be reading too much into that, though.

There is a lot of helpful insight in Spark, and I think that taking even small risks can lead to a better walk with Christ.

I received this book from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for this review. If you want to find out more about Spark, you can see it here.
