There’s a story about a scientist giving a lecture about the sun. During the talk, he said, “The sun will die in about 2 billion years.”

A guy in the back yelled, “How long?”

“Two billion years.”

“Oh, I thought you said two million.”

There is a lesson there, even if you don’t find it funny. I can see irony in that exchange, the man in the audience had a hint of sarcasm. What real difference does 2 million, let alone, 2 billion, years make in this earthly life? I’m not going to delve into eternity this post, that would be chasing a squirrel.

Think about some of the things that you get nervous and anxious about. Maybe a test for those in school, or a job interview, or any number of other things. I think that those are valid reasons to be concerned. What about some other things, like the outcome of a basketball game? What impact will that hold in a few years?

We get so uptight about things we cannot change and that don’t matter, and neglect what does matter. What about relationships? I’ve heard stories (I don’t know if they are true, but they are a good illustration) about people spending hours getting ready to watch a game on TV. Are we willing to put forth that same effort to build a friendship?

On an even deeper level, you may be one of the first to admit that you want to know God better. That’s great, now answer me this, are you willing to do what it takes to know God better?
