The Reluctant General

Some stories in the Bible don’t have enough details to satisfy our curiosity. We wonder what happened in between the start and finish. Herb Sennett took the story of Barak and Deborah fighting the Canaanites, and created a novel called, The Reluctant General.

Deborah is one of the better known judges in the Bible, but little is said about the victorious battle she led. Done correctly, a book that adds in details, though fictional, can help readers understand the real story better. Sennett based his book on the Bible passage, but added a storyline that fit with the times and stayed true to what we know happened.

We get to read how the battle could have taken place, and how events played out in the battle. We also see examples of faith in God, and that He does not forget His promises.

The Reluctant General had a good story, and stayed pretty interesting. There were a few times that it seemed to slow down for me. I think that a faster pace would have been a better read. That is just my opinion on it.

As the author stated in the Introduction to the book, it was meant to direct you to the Bible, but with a little help in better understanding the story.

I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for this review.
