I like technology. Whenever something new comes out, I’m willing to read articles and reviews about it, see how it works, what can be done with it. Then, it might be added to my list of things that I’d like to have someday. That list is pretty long at any given time, but since it is not a physical list, my memory tends to weed most of it out.

My budget keeps my from getting the majority of techno-gadgets on my list, but I’m able to get an item now and then. Many have paid off in one way or another, and technology can be a big help. But I have found that it can hold us back even more.

Those of us who text, or are around people who do, can see this first hand. I do not receive too many texts, on average it is less than 20 a week. I know others can do that many in a few minutes. Hard core texters, they know if they are one, will drop nearly anything to answer a text, including reading the Bible or praying. If they get a text while in another conversation, they will often struggle between the conversation and the text, or they may ignore the other person and read the text. This is not to mention the grammar issues that plague many texters.

What of it, is texting wrong? Not in and of itself. I text too, so I don’t disagree with it. What I’m meaning is, with it making it easier for us to talk to another person, it has made it harder to communicate with others. There you have it, something that is supposed to save time has actually made it harder, because you have to learn a whole other language to communicate “correctly.

Just to be an equal opportunity nit picker, there are many other things that were released under the umbrella of making things easier, but added extra burdens. Remote controls, social networking, fast food, and others. Again, these are not bad just because they exist, but have been abused by us, generally because they allow us to be lazy, or worse, they get between God and us. To summarize: It’s nice to be able to save time, but don’t use that time to cram more into your day. Also, communicating is much better than talking, and there is a difference.
