Culture Shift
Talk to nearly anyone, and I think they would agree that society has changed, and is changing. What was accepted years ago is now done in quiet. Those things that were frowned upon have become norms. Things are different. But what does all that mean?
In his book, Culture Shift, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. talks about these changes, and what they mean to Christians. Some points he brings up are bringing religion into politics has become taboo, children are being coddled to the point that they cannot handle difficulties as well as they should, and several other things that the culture has shifted to (thought I’d slip the title in again).
This isn’t some hoity-toity, holier-than-thou approach that he uses, but one that is based on scripture. To be fair, he included quotes from secularists to show that his concerns are not unfounded. So he tells the situation, and then tells what Christians should be looking for.
I won’t say I agree with absolutely everything he said. For example, he said that Christian parents need to be planning for their children to be taken out of public schools due to what is being taught. I understand what he is saying, but I don’t know that I would take it that far. Of course, I’m not a parent, and I live in a rural area, which he admitted that rural areas are among the last for the major secular teachings to hit.
Even with that, Dr. Mohler does a great job of presenting the problems we face, and what to be on guard against. Though I would caution to watch how fast you read. There were terms that I had to think about before I understood them. That is probably more to my reading style than his writing style, but it is something to keep in mind. In fact, if I had to say something bad, about the book, it would be that it was written just a little over my head. There was nothing that I couldn’t find the meaning of, it just that I had to think a little harder. Which, that never hurts me anyway.
As usual, you have had to sift through the above thoughts because I got the book for free from Waterbrook Multnomah as long as I reviewed it.
